KONTAN.CO.ID – JAKARTA. The Indonesian Traditional Medicine and Herbal Medicine Association (GP Jamu) requested an extension of the mandatory halal certification phasing for the herbal and traditional medicine industry.

Previously, the government gave a phasing period of 7 years since the mandatory halal certification was enacted in 2019. Based on the Draft Government Regulation (RPP) on regulations derived from Law number 33 of 2014 concerning Halal Product Guarantee (JPH), the stages will be carried out until 2026.

“GP Jamu and several associations were asked how long it takes for the halal certification process for traditional medicine. GP Jamu asked for 15 years,” said GP Jamu chairman Dwi Ranny Pertiwi Zarman when contacted by Kontan.co.id, Tuesday (12/1).

The decision is considered burdensome for the traditional medicine industry. So that GP Jamu has sent an objection to the Ministry of Religion in 2019.

However, this objection seems to have been ignored by the government. The reason is that in the draft rules that have been prepared, the deadline for the stages is according to the previous stipulation of the Ministry of Religion.

Dwi said the phasing requires a circulating fee. This includes the development of human resources (HR) in the industry.

“The process of the certification stage requires large human resources and costs, and there are still many industries that still need assistance,” Dwi explained.

Apart from traditional medicine, mandatory certification phases are also provided for the over-the-counter medicine and hard medicine industries. The phasing for the free and limited-free drug industry is carried out until 2029, while for hard drugs excluding psychotropic drugs, it will last until 2034.
